Does Wise Work With Alipay and WeChat Pay in China?
Learn how an eligible Wise card funds Alipay and WeChat Pay merchant purchases, when currency conversion happens, and which local wallet functions remain unavailable.

Quick Answer
Yes. An eligible and activated Wise card can generally be linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay and used as the funding card for supported merchant payments in mainland China.
The important detail is how the payment works: Wise provides the money behind the transaction, while Alipay or WeChat Pay handles the merchant checkout. Your Wise balance does not become a Chinese wallet balance.
You do not always need to hold CNY before paying. Wise may convert money from another available balance, although availability and fees depend on your account region and the transaction.
A linked card is not a guarantee for every merchant or service, so keep another bank card and some RMB cash ready.
What Does “Wise Works With Alipay and WeChat Pay” Actually Mean?
When you pay at a Chinese convenience store through Alipay, the cashier is not receiving money through the Wise app.
The checkout still happens through Alipay.
Wise sits behind that checkout as the linked card that supplies the funds.
The same logic applies when you use WeChat Pay:
Chinese merchant → Alipay or WeChat Pay checkout → linked Wise card → CNY balance or Wise Smart Conversion → transaction approval → payment completed
If your Wise account already holds CNY, the transaction may use that balance. If you do not hold CNY, Wise may convert the required amount from another available balance through its Smart Conversion process.
The exact conversion route and cost should be checked in your Wise account at the time of payment.
This is not the same as loading money into an Alipay or WeChat wallet. The merchant receives a normal supported merchant payment through Alipay or WeChat Pay, and Wise provides the card funding behind it.
That distinction explains most of the confusion around this topic.
Do Not Confuse Four Different Wise Features
“Wise supports Alipay and WeChat Pay” can refer to four separate functions.
They are related, but they do not give you the same abilities.

These functions use different payment paths. Success in one does not automatically unlock the others.
Linking Your Wise Card to Alipay
You add the Wise card details inside Alipay.
When you later make a supported merchant payment:
- Alipay opens the merchant checkout;
- the Wise card is selected as the funding card;
- Wise uses an available balance or converts funds when applicable;
- the transaction still has to be approved;
- the merchant receives an Alipay merchant payment.
This does not mean Wise has topped up your Alipay balance.
It also does not turn your Alipay account into the same type of wallet used by someone with a mainland Chinese bank account.
Wise has published a regional guide explaining how eligible customers can link a Wise card to Alipay and WeChat Pay. Because that page is a Singapore-region guide, check the actual card availability and terms shown in your own Wise account rather than assuming every regional detail is identical.
After adding the card, you can also check your Alipay setup before traveling to China. The goal is to confirm that the account opens, the card appears correctly and you understand the Pay and Scan functions—not to assume every future payment is guaranteed.
Linking Your Wise Card to WeChat Pay
You can also add eligible Wise card details inside WeChat Pay.
WeChat Pay then handles the supported merchant transaction, while Wise remains the funding card behind it.
A card working in Alipay does not automatically prove that it will be accepted in WeChat Pay, and the reverse is also true.
The two apps have separate:
- account states;
- identity checks;
- card-addition processes;
- merchant routes;
- transaction reviews.
Add the Wise card to each app separately and complete the steps required by each account.
Sending Money Through Wise to an Alipay or Weixin Recipient
This is a Wise international-transfer function.
It is not the same as using your own Alipay or WeChat Pay account to pay a shop.
A Wise transfer to an eligible recipient may have its own:
- sending-country rules;
- recipient requirements;
- verification process;
- transfer limits;
- funding and delivery path.
It does not give your personal Alipay or WeChat account the ability to:
- send money freely to friends;
- use every personal collection code;
- send red packets;
- operate like a mainland Chinese bank-funded wallet.
A transfer delivered to an eligible recipient and a traveler paying a merchant with a linked Wise card are different transactions.
Scanning a Supported QR Code Inside the Wise App
The Wise app also has its own QR-payment functionality for supported accounts and payment networks.
That feature has separate conditions, including account registration region and supported QR networks. Wise explains those limits in its QR payment help page.
It should not be interpreted as permission to open Wise and scan every QR code in China.
It does not automatically cover:
- every Alipay merchant code;
- every WeChat merchant code;
- personal collection codes;
- Mini Program orders;
- every Didi or restaurant payment page.
For ordinary travel spending in China, linking the Wise card to Alipay and WeChat Pay is a different and more relevant payment path.
Can You Use a Physical or Virtual Wise Card?
Wise’s Singapore-region guide states that eligible physical and virtual Wise cards can be added to Alipay and WeChat Pay.
That is useful, but it is not a global promise that every Wise card issued in every country will behave identically.
Check your own account for:
- whether Wise cards are available in your country;
- whether your card is activated;
- whether you are using the correct physical or virtual card details;
- which card network your product uses;
- whether the card is currently available for online payments;
- whether Wise is asking for additional verification.
Wise only issues cards in supported countries and regions. Its current availability list is maintained in the Wise Card country-availability guide.
A virtual card is not automatically more reliable than a physical card. It is simply another set of card details for eligible online payments.
Keep the physical Wise card when one is available. It can still be useful at a compatible card terminal, hotel or ATM, even though direct foreign-card acceptance is not as universal as mobile payment in everyday Chinese shops.
Do You Need to Convert Money to CNY First?
For many users, holding CNY in Wise is optional rather than mandatory.
If you already have a CNY balance, a supported payment may use it.
If you do not have CNY, Wise’s Smart Conversion may convert the required amount from another available balance. Wise describes this behavior in its guide to spending in a currency you do not hold.
For example, you may have GBP or EUR in Wise but no CNY.
You pay a Chinese merchant through Alipay. Wise may convert the required amount from one of your available balances and process the card transaction in CNY.
That does not mean conversion is always free.
Review the Wise app for:
- the balance being used;
- the displayed conversion;
- the current fee;
- the final amount deducted.
Holding some CNY in advance can make budgeting easier, but it is not a requirement imposed by Alipay or WeChat Pay.
Do not confuse these three things:
- CNY held in your Wise account;
- an Alipay or WeChat Pay wallet balance;
- a merchant payment funded by a linked Wise card.
They are not the same balance.
What Can You Pay For?
An eligible Wise card linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay may fund normal supported merchant purchases such as:
- convenience stores;
- supermarkets;
- restaurants;
- cafés;
- retail shops;
- taxis using a supported merchant-payment route;
- supported transport payments;
- supported app-based merchant orders;
- other ordinary merchant spending.
Alipay’s visitor-payment information describes eligible international cards as a way to pay for everyday purchases in mainland China. WeChat Pay also supports eligible international credit and debit cards for overseas visitors.
That does not mean every transaction path is identical.
A successful convenience-store payment does not guarantee:
- every Mini Program;
- every Didi transaction;
- every hotel deposit;
- every large payment;
- every specialist merchant;
- every personal QR code.
Use Wise as a funding card for normal merchant spending, not as a promise that every Chinese digital service will accept the same route.
What Wise Does Not Unlock
Linking a Wise card does not automatically unlock a full mainland Chinese wallet experience.
It does not necessarily give you:
- person-to-person transfers;
- red packets;
- payments to every personal collection QR code;
- local wallet-balance top-ups;
- wealth-management products;
- every Chinese financial service;
- every Mini Program;
- every app-based payment route.
Suppose the Wise card appears correctly in Alipay, but you then try to send money to a friend or scan a personal collection code.
If that transaction fails, it does not prove that ordinary merchant payment is broken.
Merchant payment and personal transfer are different functions.
For an overseas visitor, the normal use case is supported merchant spending through the linked international card. Alipay’s visitor page also separates merchant purchases from personal transfers and red packets.
Why a Linked Wise Card Can Still Fail
Seeing the Wise card inside Alipay or WeChat Pay only proves that the setup stage was accepted.
A real transaction may still fail because of:
- a Wise card that has not been activated;
- insufficient available balance;
- a Wise security-verification request;
- a card restriction or frozen card;
- incomplete Alipay or WeChat Pay identity checks;
- a payment-account restriction;
- an unsupported merchant or transaction route;
- a personal collection code rather than a merchant payment;
- a transaction limit;
- repeated attempts;
- a current risk-control decision.
An error message rarely identifies the exact layer by itself.
Do not keep submitting the same transaction at a busy checkout counter. Try the other payment app, another bank card or cash for the current purchase, then inspect Wise and the payment account when you have time.
For a structured diagnosis, check whether the failure came from the card, account or payment path.
Pre-Trip Wise Payment Checklist
Before depending on Wise for China travel, check each item:
- Check whether Wise cards are available in your country or region.
- Activate the Wise card.
- Confirm whether you are using physical or virtual card details.
- Add enough money to the Wise account.
- Decide whether to hold some CNY or use Smart Conversion.
- Review the current Wise conversion and card fees.
- Add the card to Alipay.
- Add the card to WeChat Pay.
- Complete the identity checks required by each payment app.
- Keep access to the Wise app.
- Keep access to your phone number and security-verification method.
- Confirm that Pay and Scan open normally.
- Understand that merchant payment is not personal transfer.
- Prepare a second card from another issuer.
- Carry the physical Wise card when available.
- Keep some RMB cash.
- Consider a small payment test only if you personally want one.
An optional pre-trip payment readiness test can show whether one basic merchant transaction works with the current account, card, merchant and amount. It is voluntary and cannot guarantee every transaction after arrival.
Should Wise Be Your Only China Payment Method?
No single funding source should carry the whole trip.
You may successfully add the same Wise card to both Alipay and WeChat Pay, but both apps can still depend on the same underlying Wise account, available balance and security status.
If the Wise card is paused, needs verification or has a balance problem, both payment apps may be affected.
A more practical setup is:
- Wise linked to Alipay;
- Wise linked to WeChat Pay;
- a second card from another bank or issuer;
- the physical Wise card;
- another physical bank card;
- some RMB cash.
This does not mean Wise is unreliable. It means two payment apps backed by one card are not the same as two independent funding sources.
Wise is also not the only debit card that may work. A normal international debit card from your existing bank may be suitable when its network, issuer settings and verification access are ready. This guide explains how to choose a debit card for Alipay and WeChat Pay.
For the full combination of mobile payment, cards and cash, use this guide to build a practical payment backup for China.
Bottom Line
Yes, an eligible and activated Wise card can generally be linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay and used to fund supported merchant payments in mainland China.
The correct way to understand the relationship is:
Alipay or WeChat Pay handles the merchant checkout. The Wise card provides the funds.
Wise money does not become a full Alipay or WeChat wallet balance.
You do not always need to convert money to CNY before paying. Wise may use CNY you already hold or convert another available balance through Smart Conversion, with the actual cost shown in your account.
Linking the card does not unlock personal transfers, red packets, every personal QR code or every Mini Program. It also does not guarantee every transaction.
Set up Wise in both payment apps before departure, keep access to Wise security verification, and bring another issuer’s card plus some RMB cash. Wise can be a useful main funding card, but it should not be your only payment route.
