Quick Answer

Yes. An eligible Revolut Visa or Mastercard can generally be linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay and used as the funding card for supported merchant payments in mainland China.

The important detail is how the transaction works:

Alipay or WeChat Pay handles the merchant checkout. Revolut provides the card, the available balance and any required currency conversion behind the payment.

Your Revolut balance does not become an Alipay or WeChat wallet balance. Adding the card also does not guarantee every purchase, Mini Program, Didi order or hotel payment.

You do not normally have to buy CNY before departure. Revolut may convert another sufficient balance automatically, but the exact fees and account rules depend on your plan and issuing region.

Keep another card and some RMB cash. Revolut should not be the only payment route for the whole trip.

What Does “Revolut Works With Alipay and WeChat Pay” Actually Mean?

Imagine that you are buying water at a Chinese convenience store.

You open the payment code in Alipay and let the cashier scan it. The merchant sees an Alipay merchant payment. Alipay then sends the card transaction through the Revolut card you selected.

Revolut checks:

  • whether the card is active;
  • whether online payments are enabled;
  • whether one available balance can cover the transaction;
  • whether currency conversion is needed;
  • whether extra authorisation is required;
  • whether the transaction can be approved.

Only after those steps does the merchant receive a completed payment.

The same logic applies to WeChat Pay.

The payment chain is:

Chinese merchant → Alipay or WeChat Pay → linked Revolut card → CNY balance, base currency or another sufficient balance → automatic conversion when needed → Revolut or 3D Secure authorisation → payment completed

This is why Revolut does not replace Alipay or WeChat Pay. It sits behind them as the international card and funding source.

Revolut’s China currency guide says its cards can be used for CNY spending and connected to Chinese mobile-payment apps. Alipay and WeChat Pay accept eligible international Visa and Mastercard cards. Together, that means an eligible Revolut card can generally be tried in both apps—but the exact card, account and transaction still need to be approved.

After adding the card, you can check your Alipay setup before traveling to China. The goal is to confirm that the account opens, the card appears correctly and you understand the Pay and Scan functions, not to assume that every future payment is guaranteed.

Three Revolut Functions You Should Not Confuse

Revolut, Alipay and WeChat Pay can interact through several different routes.

They are not interchangeable.

Three different Revolut payment paths: linking a card to Alipay or WeChat Pay, using the card directly, and sending money to an Alipay recipient

These are separate payment paths. Success in one does not automatically prove that the others will work.

Linking a Revolut Card to Alipay or WeChat Pay

This is the main route discussed in this article.

You add the Revolut card details to your own Alipay or WeChat Pay account.

For a supported merchant purchase:

  • the payment app opens the checkout;
  • the Revolut card provides the funds;
  • Revolut selects an available balance;
  • Revolut converts currency when needed;
  • the transaction may require authorisation;
  • the merchant receives an Alipay or WeChat Pay payment.

This is not a wallet top-up.

For example, you may hold EUR or GBP in Revolut but no CNY. When you pay a normal Chinese merchant through Alipay, Revolut may convert one sufficient available balance into the required CNY amount.

The money is not first loaded into your Alipay balance.

Using Revolut Directly at a Card Terminal or ATM

A physical Revolut card can also be used directly where its Visa or Mastercard network is accepted.

That may include:

  • compatible hotel terminals;
  • larger merchants;
  • airport businesses;
  • international chains;
  • compatible ATMs.

Direct card use and mobile QR payment are different routes.

A small Chinese restaurant may accept Alipay and WeChat Pay but have no terminal that accepts an overseas card. A hotel terminal may accept the physical Revolut card even when a particular app-based payment route does not.

One route succeeding does not guarantee the other.

Sending Money From Revolut to an Alipay Recipient

Revolut also offers an international-transfer route to eligible Alipay wallet recipients.

That is a remittance service.

It is not the same as adding the Revolut card to your own Alipay account.

A transfer may require:

  • the recipient’s Alipay information;
  • identity information;
  • sending-country eligibility;
  • transfer limits;
  • separate verification.

It does not mean your own foreign-card-funded Alipay account can suddenly:

  • transfer money freely to friends;
  • pay every personal QR code;
  • send red packets;
  • use all local wallet functions.

Merchant payment and international remittance are different products.

Why Is a Revolut Card Eligible in Principle?

Revolut issues Visa and Mastercard cards.

The network you receive can depend on:

  • your account registration country;
  • the specific card product;
  • the issuing arrangement;
  • current availability.

Alipay accepts eligible major international credit and debit cards issued outside mainland China for normal merchant spending.

WeChat Pay also accepts eligible international cards, including Visa and Mastercard.

That means a Revolut Visa or Mastercard is generally eligible in principle for the card-addition process.

But the full process still has several stages:

  1. The Revolut card belongs to an eligible network.
  2. Alipay or WeChat Pay accepts the card details.
  3. The payment app creates a real merchant transaction.
  4. Revolut finds a sufficient balance.
  5. Revolut converts currency when necessary.
  6. Revolut or the merchant may request authorisation.
  7. The merchant payment completes.

“Card added” proves only that the setup stage was accepted.

It does not prove that all later stages have already been approved.

Revolut is one possible card source, but the same network, security and backup checks apply to other travel cards. This guide explains how to choose a debit card for Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Physical and Virtual Revolut Cards

Revolut offers both physical and virtual cards.

Either type may be accepted by Alipay or WeChat Pay when:

  • the card details are current;
  • the card is active;
  • the card network is eligible;
  • online transactions are enabled;
  • the payment app accepts the card;
  • the real transaction is approved.

A virtual card is not automatically more reliable than a physical card.

It is simply another set of card details.

Do not assume that a single-use virtual card is suitable for a saved mobile wallet. Those card details may change after use, which is not helpful for a card intended to remain linked.

Before departure, open the Revolut app and confirm:

  • whether your card is Visa or Mastercard;
  • whether the card is active;
  • whether the number has been replaced;
  • whether online payments are enabled;
  • whether the card is frozen;
  • whether security checks can be completed.

Keep the physical Revolut card when available. It remains useful for compatible hotel terminals, ATMs and merchants that accept international cards directly.

Do You Need to Convert Money to CNY First?

No. Pre-converting money to CNY is optional for many Revolut users, not a universal requirement.

Revolut generally looks for a sufficient balance in this order:

  1. the transaction currency;
  2. the account’s base currency;
  3. another active currency balance with enough money.

Suppose you make a CNY payment through Alipay.

You Have Enough CNY

Revolut may charge the CNY balance directly.

You Have No CNY but Enough EUR or GBP

Revolut may automatically convert one sufficient balance and complete the payment.

You Have Several Small Balances but None Is Large Enough

Revolut does not normally combine several insufficient currency balances to cover one card transaction.

For example, your CNY, EUR and GBP balances may add up to enough money, but if no single balance can cover the complete purchase and any applicable cost, the transaction may still fail.

That is the practical rule to remember:

Keep enough money in one available currency balance to cover the complete payment.

Automatic conversion is not always free.

The cost can depend on:

  • your Revolut plan;
  • your account region;
  • current exchange allowances;
  • the currencies involved;
  • transaction timing;
  • current pricing rules.

Check the fee and conversion information shown in your own Revolut app.

Holding some CNY before the trip can make budgeting easier. It is not a requirement imposed by Alipay or WeChat Pay, and it is not automatically the cheapest choice for every account.

Why May Revolut Ask You to Approve the Payment Again?

A card appearing inside Alipay does not mean you will never need the Revolut app again.

Some merchant-payment routes may be processed as online card payments. The merchant or payment network may request 3D Secure authorisation.

Revolut may then:

  • send a push notification;
  • ask you to open the Revolut app;
  • show the transaction details;
  • ask you to approve or reject the payment;
  • require another login or security step.

Picture a busy supermarket checkout.

Alipay accepts the payment request, but Revolut asks for confirmation in the app. At that point, card linking is no longer the problem.

The weak point is whether:

  • your phone has internet access;
  • the Revolut app is installed;
  • you are still logged in;
  • push notifications are enabled;
  • you can complete the security check.

A missed authorisation can stop the transaction even though the card was added correctly.

Not every Alipay or WeChat Pay transaction will require 3D Secure. You simply need to be ready when it is requested.

What Can Work—and What May Still Vary?

A linked Revolut card may fund ordinary supported merchant purchases such as:

  • convenience stores;
  • supermarkets;
  • restaurants;
  • cafés;
  • retail shops;
  • established merchant QR codes;
  • some hotel payments;
  • supported transport payments;
  • supported app-based merchant orders.

A normal low-value merchant purchase is the clearest first test.

Examples include:

  • buying water at a convenience store;
  • paying at a café;
  • purchasing groceries;
  • paying at a staffed restaurant counter.

But different payment paths may behave differently.

Do not assume that one successful shop payment proves all of these will work:

  • Didi;
  • metro services;
  • Mini Programs;
  • hotel deposits;
  • online ticketing;
  • larger payments;
  • personal collection codes.

For example, a hotel payment may work while an app-based transport payment is declined.

That does not prove Revolut “never works in China.” It means the two transactions used different merchants or payment paths.

Try another linked card, switch between Alipay and WeChat Pay, or use another transport option. Finish the immediate task first and investigate the failed route later.

Merchant Payment Is Not Wallet Top-Up or Personal Transfer

A Revolut card linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay is mainly useful as a funding card for merchant purchases.

Do not mix up:

  • merchant payment;
  • wallet-balance top-up;
  • sending money to a friend;
  • paying a personal collection code;
  • red packets;
  • Revolut-to-Alipay international remittance.

Suppose the Revolut card appears correctly in Alipay, but you try to send money to a private person and the payment fails.

That does not prove normal merchant payment is unavailable.

Alipay’s international-card route is designed mainly for merchant spending. It does not automatically unlock person-to-person transfers, red packets or every local financial function.

For WeChat Pay, the visitor-facing information is also centered on supported merchant payments. Do not assume a foreign card creates a full local wallet.

Why a Linked Revolut Card Can Still Fail

A real merchant transaction may fail after the Revolut card was added because of:

  • a card that is not activated;
  • old or replaced card details;
  • online transactions being disabled;
  • insufficient funds;
  • no single currency balance large enough;
  • an account or spending limit;
  • incomplete Revolut or 3D Secure authorisation;
  • incomplete Alipay or WeChat Pay identity checks;
  • a payment-account restriction;
  • an unsupported merchant or payment route;
  • a personal QR code;
  • an app-based integration;
  • merchant category;
  • security review;
  • repeated attempts.

One error message does not always tell you which layer caused the decline.

Do not stand at the counter repeatedly submitting the same payment. Use another linked card, the other payment app or cash for the immediate purchase.

Then check whether the failure came from the card, account or payment path.

Pre-Trip Revolut Payment Checklist

Before relying on Revolut in China:

  • Check whether your Revolut card is Visa or Mastercard.
  • Confirm that the card is active.
  • Confirm that the card details have not been replaced.
  • Make sure online transactions are enabled.
  • Install Revolut on the phone you will carry.
  • Confirm that the app opens and you can log in.
  • Enable push notifications.
  • Confirm that you can complete 3D Secure.
  • Keep access to your phone number and security-verification route.
  • Keep enough money in one currency balance to cover a payment.
  • Decide whether to hold some CNY or use automatic conversion.
  • Check your plan’s current exchange allowance and fees.
  • Add the card to Alipay.
  • Add the card to WeChat Pay.
  • Complete the identity checks requested by both apps.
  • Confirm that Pay and Scan open normally.
  • Do not use a personal transfer as your merchant-payment test.
  • Prepare a second card from another issuer.
  • Keep both mobile-payment apps available.
  • Carry the physical Revolut card where available.
  • Carry another physical card.
  • Keep some RMB cash.
  • Consider a small test only if you personally want one.

An optional pre-trip payment readiness test can show whether one basic merchant payment works with your current account, card, merchant and amount.

It is voluntary and cannot guarantee every payment after arrival.

Should Revolut Be Your Only Payment Method in China?

No.

The same Revolut card may be linked to both Alipay and WeChat Pay, but both apps can still depend on:

  • the same Revolut account;
  • the same underlying card;
  • the same available balance;
  • the same security status.

If Revolut needs verification, the card is paused or the balance is too low, both payment apps may be affected.

A more practical setup is:

  • Revolut linked to Alipay;
  • Revolut linked to WeChat Pay;
  • a second card from another issuer;
  • both mobile-payment apps kept available;
  • the physical Revolut card;
  • another physical bank card;
  • some RMB cash.

This is not a criticism of Revolut. Two payment apps funded by one card are not two independent funding sources.

Use this guide to build a practical payment backup for China instead of relying on one app or one financial product.

Bottom Line

Yes. An eligible Revolut Visa or Mastercard can generally be linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay and used to fund supported merchant payments in mainland China.

The correct way to understand the relationship is:

Alipay or WeChat Pay handles the merchant checkout. Revolut handles the card funding, balance selection, currency conversion and any required authorisation.

Your Revolut balance is not an Alipay or WeChat wallet balance.

You do not always need to buy CNY in advance. Revolut may use an existing CNY balance or convert another single sufficient balance automatically. The actual cost depends on your account and current pricing.

A card being added does not guarantee every merchant, Mini Program, Didi ride, hotel deposit or personal payment.

Set up Revolut in both payment apps before departure, keep the Revolut app and security verification accessible, and carry another issuer’s card plus some RMB cash.

Revolut can be a useful main funding source in China. It should not be your only payment route.
