Alipay
My Foreign Card Is Linked to Alipay, but Payment Still Fails—Was It the Bank, Account, or QR Code?
Foreign card linked but Alipay payment failed? Diagnose bank SMS or app verification, issuer activity, Alipay messages, and the QR or checkout path.

Quick Answer
If an Alipay checkout suddenly opens an SMS-code screen or asks you to approve the payment in your banking app, the transaction has usually reached the issuer-authentication layer. First identify which institution is asking for verification and which phone number, email address, or banking app the issuer is using.
If you cannot complete the challenge, do not keep scanning the QR code or requesting new codes at the counter. Use a second card, another payment app, cash, or a physical card to finish the purchase, then compare the merchant, Alipay, and issuer records before trying again.
An incomplete challenge does not automatically mean your Alipay account is restricted, and it does not always mean the bank issued a final decline. Authentication, issuer approval, and merchant confirmation are separate stages.
First, Get Through the Checkout
When a payment fails at a store counter, airport exit, taxi drop-off point, or hotel desk, your immediate goal is to complete the purchase—not to repair the entire payment chain in front of the merchant.
Use this order:
- Try a second linked card.
- Use another payment app that is already set up.
- If scanning the merchant QR code failed, ask whether the merchant can scan your payment code instead.
- Use cash or a physical bank card if the merchant accepts it.
- Move away from the checkout area before doing detailed troubleshooting.
For a fuller fallback plan, switch to a prepared China payment backup using mobile wallets, physical cards, and cash.
Before leaving the transaction, record the local time, amount, currency, merchant name, selected card ending, payment path, and exact error wording. Redact full card numbers, CVV codes, one-time passwords, passport numbers, payment codes, and account credentials from screenshots.
Never send an OTP, password, card details, or a banking-app approval screenshot to a merchant, stranger, forum user, or unofficial support account.
What “Card Linked Successfully” Actually Proves
A foreign card appearing in Alipay proves only that the card-adding stage was completed. A real merchant payment may still pass through several separate stages:
- Card added: The card is stored as a payment method.
- Identity verified: Any identity step currently required by the account is complete.
- Transaction authenticated: The issuer challenge for this payment is completed, if one is required.
- Transaction approved: The issuer and payment path allow the charge to proceed.
- Payment completed: Alipay shows success and the merchant receives final confirmation.
Card added does not equal transaction authenticated. Authentication does not equal final approval. Approval is not useful until the merchant receives confirmation.
Eligible international credit and debit cards can be used for supported daily merchant purchases in the Chinese mainland, but card eligibility does not guarantee that every issuer, amount, merchant, QR path, or security challenge will succeed.
Travelers who have not yet departed should prepare their bank-verification access before the trip, including the linked card, banking app, registered phone number, and backup payment methods.
Step 1 — Did Your Bank See or Challenge the Transaction?
Open the official banking app or online-banking account for the selected card. Search around the payment time and amount. The issuer record is one of the strongest clues, but each result means something different.
The Bank Shows a Clear Decline
If the issuer records the transaction and clearly marks it declined, contact the issuing bank first. Check whether the card is locked and whether overseas, online, or card-not-present transactions are restricted.
The issuing bank is the correct party to explain an issuer-side decline.
The Bank Shows a Verification Request
An SMS code, email code, banking-app approval, or other security challenge means the payment has reached an issuer-authentication step.
Do not submit the payment again yet. First determine who issued the challenge and why that exact verification channel is unavailable. The next section provides the recovery order.
The Bank Shows a Pending or Reversed Entry
If the bank shows a pending hold, temporary authorization, or reversed entry while the merchant says the payment failed, do not immediately submit the same amount again.
Check whether Alipay or the merchant confirms success and whether another identical amount is already pending. If not, use a backup method and keep the records until the issuer status becomes clear.
The Bank Shows No Matching Activity
No immediate issuer record does not prove that the request never reached the bank; records may appear later or the failure may have occurred earlier in the chain.
Next, inspect the exact Alipay message and the payment path. Do not assign responsibility to Alipay or the bank from the absence of one record alone.
What Should You Do If Your Bank’s SMS or App Verification Fails During an Alipay Payment?
A realistic scenario is straightforward: a traveler scans a normal-looking merchant QR code and selects a foreign card already linked to Alipay. Instead of completing, the checkout opens an issuer-verification screen. The code goes to the phone number registered with the bank, but that home line cannot receive SMS in China, so the challenge cannot be completed.
The bank-registered verification number may be different from the number used to register Alipay.

First Identify Who Is Asking for Verification
Look for evidence on the screen:
- the bank name;
- the card ending;
- a masked phone number or email address;
- the SMS sender;
- a request to open the banking app;
- a specific authentication name shown by the issuer or card network.
Use issuer authentication, bank verification, SMS code, or bank-app approval unless the page explicitly names Visa Secure, Mastercard Identity Check, 3-D Secure, or another system. Not every payment uses the same method.
An Alipay account-security prompt normally refers to the Alipay account, identity information, or a platform restriction. An issuer challenge usually shows the issuing bank, card ending, bank-registered channel, or an instruction to approve the transaction through the bank.
Foreign visitors generally do not need a Chinese phone number for ordinary merchant-payment preparation, but they must keep access to the overseas number and bank-verification channels they actually use.
If the SMS Code Does Not Arrive
Use this sequence:
- Check the masked number shown on the verification screen.
- Confirm that the number still belongs to you.
- Confirm that the matching home SIM or home eSIM is still turned on.
- Check whether the home line is registered on a roaming network rather than showing No Service or SOS only.
- Ask a trusted contact to send an ordinary SMS to the home number.
- Check whether the issuer offers an app, email, or another official authentication method.
- Do not press Resend code repeatedly.
If ordinary SMS also fails, contact the home mobile carrier first. Ask about the line status, China roaming partners, SMS reception, and whether international service must be enabled. A travel eSIM can provide mobile data, but it does not automatically receive ordinary SMS sent to the home number. The separate internet guide explains how to keep your original number reachable while using travel data in China.
If ordinary SMS works but only the bank OTP fails, contact the issuing bank first. Confirm which number is registered for payment authentication, whether the issuer sent the message, whether roaming delivery is supported, whether a security restriction blocked the challenge, and whether another official method is available.
If the challenge points to an old or inaccessible number, use the bank’s official account-recovery or security process. Alipay and the merchant cannot update the issuer’s registered phone number. Do not assume every bank can change the number immediately while you are overseas.
Roaming SMS availability and charges depend on the home carrier, plan, roaming arrangement, and issuer.
If the Banking-App Approval Does Not Appear
First make sure the official bank app has internet access and that you can log in normally.
Open the app manually instead of waiting only for a push. Check pending approvals, security, cards, notifications, or recent transactions; menu names vary by issuer.
Also check:
- that you are logged into the correct banking account;
- that the challenged card belongs to that account;
- whether the bank app requires an update;
- whether notification permission is disabled;
- whether battery-saving settings restrict background notifications;
- whether the app has signed you out and requires another login.
If the banking app itself asks for an SMS code sent to an inaccessible old number, the failure is still in the issuer’s authentication channel. Use official bank recovery or security support rather than changing Alipay settings.
If you still cannot find the request, contact the bank through the card, official website, or official app—not a search advertisement, comment, or unsolicited message.
Do not uninstall the banking app, clear its data, or sign out of an account that still works as your first response at the checkout. Those actions can remove your only usable issuer-access channel.
If the Verification Page Times Out, Loops, or Returns to Alipay
A cancelled, expired, looping, or interrupted page may mean authentication was not completed. It proves neither a charge nor a final decline.
Do not scan again immediately. Check:
- the Alipay transaction record;
- whether the merchant received a success confirmation;
- whether the bank shows pending, declined, approved, or no matching activity;
- whether an identical temporary hold already exists.
If the three records do not agree, use a backup payment method and keep the evidence. Do not create a second uncertain transaction while the first status remains unresolved.
If You Approved the Verification but the Payment Still Failed
Authentication is only one stage. The issuer may still decline, the payment path may not support the transaction, or the merchant may not receive final confirmation.
Check the final bank status, the Alipay transaction status, and the merchant’s receipt or terminal result. Only after the previous attempt is clear should you make one controlled retry.
If that retry also fails, switch cards or payment methods. Do not keep forcing the same card and authentication route.
When to Stop Retrying
Stop when any of the following applies:
- the same OTP has already been requested several times;
- the same payment has been submitted several times;
- the bank or Alipay shows a pending state;
- the merchant’s receipt status is unclear;
- the account or card becomes temporarily locked;
- the banking app says manual review is required;
- an unknown hold or preauthorization appears;
- a page asks you to provide sensitive information through an unofficial channel.
Step 2 — What Exactly Did Alipay Show?
Use the exact current Alipay message, not an old screenshot or third-party tutorial.
Identity or Document Prompt
If Alipay asks for a passport, facial verification, or more identity information, the problem is at the account-identity layer. Do not keep changing cards while an explicit identity prompt remains unresolved.
Account Restriction or Unusual Activity
Stop repeated attempts, save the wording, and use official Alipay support. A bank cannot remove an Alipay account restriction.
Card Temporarily Unavailable
If another linked card works with the same ordinary merchant, prioritize the first card and its issuer. If every card becomes unavailable, inspect the account prompt and payment path rather than assuming several banks independently failed at the same time.
Transaction or Payment Method Not Supported
The issue may relate to the merchant type, QR path, or transaction category. International cards linked to Alipay are mainly intended for supported merchant purchases; this does not make every personal-collection code, transfer, deposit, Mini Program, or special route eligible.
Limit or Additional Verification
Follow the current prompt and do not rely on a fixed limit copied from an old article. Requirements can change by account, card, issuer, transaction, and current platform policy.
If the page clearly displays issuer SMS or banking-app authentication, return to the bank-verification section above.
Generic Failure
A generic failure message does not provide enough evidence by itself. Combine it with the issuer record and the payment path before deciding what to check first.
Step 3 — What Payment Path Were You Using?
Several different operations may all feel like “paying with Alipay”:
- the merchant scans your payment code;
- you scan a merchant QR code;
- you scan a personal collection code;
- you pay inside a Mini Program or another app;
- a hotel requests a deposit or preauthorization;
- the purchase is larger or unusual for the card.
A bank challenge appearing after a scan does not prove by itself that the QR code was personal or commercial. Use the merchant name, Alipay message, and issuer record together.
Failure on a personal code, deposit, Mini Program, or unusual transaction does not prove the card will fail on an ordinary supported merchant purchase.
Use One Controlled Comparison
A useful comparison changes only one important variable:
- same merchant, different linked card;
- same card, different ordinary merchant;
- same merchant, different wallet;
- scanning fails, then the merchant scans your payment code;
- an ordinary small purchase works, but a special path fails;
- Card A opens an issuer challenge you cannot complete, while Card B succeeds on the same ordinary merchant purchase.
That result makes Card A or its issuer-authentication channel the first suspect; it does not prove the card can never work with Alipay.
After one meaningful comparison, stop. Do not simultaneously change the card, network, identity details, and QR path.
Who Should You Contact First?
This table gives a priority order, not a remote determination of fault.
| Observed evidence | Check first | Why | What to save |
|---|---|---|---|
| The home line cannot receive ordinary SMS | Home mobile carrier | The basic SMS route is not working | Network status, time, ordinary-SMS test |
| Ordinary SMS works, but the bank OTP does not arrive | Issuing bank | The issuer-specific authentication route failed | Masked number, card ending, time |
| Banking-app approval never appears | Issuing bank | The issuer controls its approval method | Challenge screen, bank-app record |
| The banking app requires an inaccessible old number | Bank account-recovery or security support | The bank-registered channel must be updated | Masked old number, account prompt |
| Verification completes, but the bank records a decline | Issuing bank | The issuer made the final decline | Amount, currency, decline wording |
| Verification times out and the transaction status is unclear | Check merchant, Alipay, and issuer records before retrying | A duplicate payment must be ruled out | All three records, time, amount |
| Alipay shows an identity or account restriction | Alipay | The problem is at the account layer | Exact Alipay wording |
| A personal or unsupported QR path is involved | Merchant or a different payment route | The route may not support the card-funded payment | QR context, merchant explanation |
| The bank shows no record and Alipay gives a generic error | Alipay message and payment path first | There is not enough evidence to assign the bank | Error wording, payment route |
| One card fails and another succeeds | First card’s issuing bank | The account and merchant path worked with another card | Both card endings and results |
What Not to Do
- Do not keep scanning the same QR code.
- Do not repeatedly press Resend code.
- Do not change several networks, cards, and identity details at once.
- Do not immediately delete and re-add every linked card.
- Do not uninstall the banking app.
- Do not sign out of a bank account that still works.
- Do not share an OTP, password, card details, or approval screenshot.
- Do not call a number found in an unsolicited text, comment, or search advertisement.
- Do not assume a timeout means no money was held or charged.
- Do not turn a checkout counter, taxi drop-off point, airport exit, or hotel desk into a long troubleshooting session.
- Do not test the card by scanning a stranger’s personal QR code.
- Do not assume one successful authentication means future purchases will never require another challenge.
Bottom Line
When a linked foreign card opens an SMS or banking-app challenge during Alipay checkout:
- complete the current purchase with a backup method;
- identify whether the issuer or Alipay is asking for verification;
- confirm which bank-registered channel is being used;
- separate ordinary-SMS failure from a bank-only OTP failure;
- compare the bank, Alipay, and merchant status for the previous attempt;
- make no more than one controlled retry after the status is clear;
- contact the mobile carrier, issuing bank, Alipay, or merchant according to the evidence;
- keep a second card, another wallet, a physical card, or RMB cash available.
Do not force the same payment through again. Confirm the previous result, then repair the failed authentication channel or switch payment paths.
