Black-and-gold guide comparing a standard Didi car, a six-seat MPV, and two cars for families traveling with large luggage.

Quick answer

For a family traveling with older relatives, children, and several large suitcases, choose a 6-Seater, Large Car, Premium XL, or MPV-style option when it is available.

A normal five-seat car is usually fine for one to three travelers with limited luggage.

For three to five travelers with several large bags, a six-passenger or MPV option is usually the safer choice.

For six travelers, or for a group carrying several large suitcases plus a stroller, wheelchair, or other bulky item, do not assume one seven-seat vehicle will fit everything. Two standard cars may be more practical.

For more than six travelers, usually request two cars.

Choose by passengers and luggage

Vehicle names vary by city and by whether you use the DiDi app, Alipay, or WeChat. Focus on the passenger capacity and vehicle size rather than one exact label.

Why a “6-Seater” may be a seven-seat vehicle

A DiDi option shown as “6-Seater” usually means space for up to about six passengers.

The actual vehicle may have seven seats in total:

one driver + up to about six passengers

It does not mean seven travelers can ride with the driver.

Children also need a proper passenger seat. Do not leave them out of the passenger count because they are smaller.

Seats and luggage use the same space

A seven-seat MPV can look large, but using the third row may reduce the remaining luggage area.

That is why a vehicle may have enough seats but not enough room for:

  • several large checked suitcases;
  • a folded stroller;
  • a wheelchair;
  • child equipment;
  • other bulky bags.

The exact space depends on the vehicle sent, the suitcase sizes, and how the seats are arranged. DiDi cannot guarantee one exact model or trunk size for every request.

The highest-risk situation is:

six passengers using every passenger seat, plus several large suitcases

In that case, two standard cars are often easier than trying to force everyone and everything into one MPV.

When one MPV is a sensible choice

A six-passenger or MPV option is usually worth trying when:

  • three or four passengers have several large suitcases;
  • four or five passengers have a moderate amount of luggage;
  • older travelers need easier entry and more seating space;
  • the group has one folded stroller;
  • a standard sedan is clearly too small.

Five passengers with several very large suitcases may still be too much for the actual vehicle. Confirm after the driver accepts the ride.

When to request two cars

Two standard cars are often the safer choice when:

  • six passengers also have multiple large suitcases;
  • the group has more than six travelers;
  • every traveler has a large checked bag;
  • there is a wheelchair or large stroller;
  • older relatives and children need more room;
  • you cannot risk discovering at pickup that the luggage will not fit.

Two cars may cost more, but they reduce the chance of cancelling and rebooking after the vehicle arrives.

Message the driver after booking

After a driver accepts, use the in-app message function to send the exact numbers.

For example:

We have 5 passengers, 4 large suitcases, and 1 stroller. Will everything fit in your car?

Chinese version:

我们有5名乘客、4个大行李箱和1辆婴儿车,请问您的车能装得下吗?

DiDi’s current China app supports in-app messaging with bilingual translation, although the buttons may look different in the main app, Alipay, or WeChat.

If the driver says the vehicle is too small, change to a larger option or request two cars before pickup.

Bottom line

Use this simple rule:

Few travelers and light luggage: standard car. Three to five travelers with large bags: 6-Seater or MPV. Six travelers with large luggage: consider two cars. More than six travelers: usually request two cars.

Count passengers, suitcases, strollers, wheelchairs, and bulky items separately. Seat capacity alone does not tell you whether the luggage will fit.
