How to Prepare Alipay and WeChat Pay Before Landing in China
A practical pre-arrival checklist for foreign travelers who do not want payment setup to fail at the airport, hotel, or first restaurant.
China is very convenient once your mobile payment setup works. The problem is that many foreign travelers only test it after landing, when they are already tired, connected to unstable Wi-Fi, and trying to pay for transport or food.
Before departure, install both Alipay and WeChat. Add your passport name exactly as it appears on your travel document, bind a foreign card, and finish any identity verification requested by the app. Do not assume one app is enough. Some merchants prefer one system, some mini programs work better inside one ecosystem, and some services may reject certain foreign cards.
After setup, make a small test if possible. Save screenshots of important screens, keep a backup card, and carry a small amount of cash for your first day. If payment fails, check whether the issue is network, card verification, merchant type, spending limit, or app account status.
