China eSIM, VPN, and Airport Wi-Fi: What to Set Up First
The connectivity order that avoids the most common first-hour problems after arrival in mainland China.
Your first hour in China is easier when your internet plan is already prepared. Do not rely only on airport Wi-Fi. It may require SMS verification, may be slow, and may not work well when you need maps, ride-hailing, translation, or payment apps immediately.
A practical setup is to buy an eSIM before departure, install it while you still have stable home internet, and keep all setup instructions offline. If you use a VPN or overseas roaming, test it before boarding. Do not wait until you are behind a different network environment to discover that your setup instructions are locked inside an app or email you cannot access.
Keep a backup: screenshots of QR codes, hotel address in Chinese, passport photo page, booking confirmations, and emergency contact details.
